ALBUM REVIEW: MONEY – SUICIDE SONGS
Manchester trio MONEY received either acclaim or disdain for its debut album The Shadow of Heaven (2013) with folks either hailing them as the ‘next big thing’ or writing them off as ‘overrated’. In either case, it would be instructional to see where MONEY went with its sophomore effort.

ALBUM REVIEW: SUEDE – NIGHT THOUGHTS
The “difficult sophomore album” is a well-worn trope in popular music. It’s the rite of passage that proves that an artist’s early success was no accident. It’s proverbially difficult because it has to sound like the first album, yet different; it has to written in a shorter amount of time, yet be more expansive.
Most bands only have to go through this ordeal once. Britpop stalwarts Suede, however, have had to do it a second time.
LIVE NEWS: GENTLE BONES LIVE IN CONCERT
Universal Music Singapore has announced a new date for Gentle Bones’ concert this year.
EP REVIEW: STRAIT GROOVE – NEXT PLEASE
if there’s anything that Singapore pop band Strait Groove deserves full marks for, it has to be perseverance. Formed in 2011, the band has already released two full albums that went under the local music radar somewhat.
LANEWAY SINGAPORE 2016: PoP RECOMMENDATIONS
ALBUM REVIEW: STEVEN WILSON – 4½
An interim release between Wilson’s previous album Hand. Cannot. Erase. and the next studio album. Which makes 4½ sound like some throwaway, some stopgap. Trust me, it is definitely not.
ALBUM REVIEW: FAT WHITE FAMILY – SONGS FOR OUR MOTHERS
I am trying my best to figure what the fuck are Fat White Family supposed to be? This South London outfit – which if legend will have us believe, formed in a squat – defies easy categorisation. At the moment, that might be their biggest advantage.

PoPTV: THE CORAL – MISS FORTUNE
Happy days are here again cuz The Coral is back! Psych-pop at its best!!
Nuff said!!!
PoPTV: WHITE DENIM – HOLDA YOU (I’M PSYCHO)
ALBUM REVIEW: SAVAGES – ADORE LIFE
In general terms, the post-punk revival has overstayed its welcome – seriously, stop ripping off Ian Curtis and Joy Division already. But that judgement call does not fall on Savages. It’s fair to say that despite the band’s superficial association with this movement, the all-female quartet really are a class above and unlike their peers, actually have something to say.

PoPTV: THE NEW ROCK N ROLL
Rock ‘n’ roll might not have the same commercial or cultural impact it used to have but we promise to keep the flag flying.
Here are videos of new music you should be listening to that expresses the spirit of rock ‘n’ roll. Enjoy!

ALBUM REVIEW: MYSTERY JETS – CURVE OF THE EARTH
To be honest, have never quite been able to connect with the music of Mystery Jets, for one reason or another. However, one has to admire the manner in which this English band has stuck to their guns and followed the pop-rock muse, wherever it might have led them.

GEEK OUT! SUICIDE SQUAD TRAILER
Yes, this is a fantastic trailer. BUT even the Fantastic Four reboot had a fantastic trailer! So who knows?
All I know is that Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn is going to steal the show. And combined with Jared Leto’s Joker? Surely a Joker-Harley movie cannot be far behind…
Hope DC has enough Harley Quinn toys ready for the inevitable demand.
Opening in Singapore August 4th!
LIVE NEWS: LANEWAY SINGAPORE 2016 ADDING FOURTH STAGE!
Laneway Festival Singapore has announced the instalment of a fourth stage at this year’s event. Set up with local collective Syndicate, the stage brings together a new genre of local and international electronic DJs and visual artists, including Australia’s JPS, Singapore’s Mean, and visual artist Brandon Tay accompanying duo Kiat & Kane on stage.
Tickets
If this doesn’t signal the death of rock ‘n’ roll, I don’t know what does then. Clearly, the Laneway Singapore organisers found it commercially viable to install a fourth stage and then feature electronic artists rather than rock acts. Whilst I am pleased for Syndicate and how this is a feather in their cap, it’s certainly sad to see that one of the biggest festivals in Singapore (and an Aussie one at that) will barely feature any rock ‘n’ roll music.
SINGLE REVIEW: WEEZER – KING OF THE WORLD
It seems Weezer forgot to read the ‘Rock is Dead” memo – what the fuck are they doing still playing electric guitars & real drums?!?!

KEVIN SAYS …
Since the late 80s, there have been numerous pronouncements of the death of rock ’n’ roll. Each time, the prophets of doom have been proven wrong – the 1990s with the rise of Nirvana and the 2000s with the Strokes and the post-punk revival. But I sincerely fear that 2016 might be the year that time is called on the former institution known as rock ’n’ roll.
Perhaps it is the death of David Bowie that has depressed me to such an extent that this doomsday scenario now becomes a reality. But just look at the Billboard Top 20 singles and you will realise that rock ’n’ roll is completely absent. I have also been analysing the acts on Laneway Singapore 2016 and bar the rare exception (like Cashew Chemists), again there are no bands playing rock ’n’ roll!
This realisation has also aided in my decision to quit as a solo performer, whether live or in the studio – and focus on other aspects in my life. My main pre-occupation in music will be as a journalist and hopefully, as a curator and mentor. That is the only way I can see myself making a contribution. My music as a solo artist has no fucking significance whatsoever. Time to move on then.
… still there’s more …
