RYAN ALLEN AND HIS EXTRA ARMS – BASEMENT PUNK (SELF-RELEASED)

It is always refreshing when an album review is as straightforward as this. It’s really a no-brainer. If you believe in everything we have been talking about here at the Power of Pop, then you will need no more reasons to check out Basement Punk. It’s everything a traditional pop-rock album should be – melodic tunes, jangly & crunching guitars with lively drums that will keep the listener toe tapping, head bopping & singing along for its duration. https://www.facebook.com/ryanallenandhisextraarms

PHIL AND LU – MOOD ROCK (SELF-RELEASED)

Once upon a time, back in the 70s, rock journey would have labelled the music of Phil and Lu (siblings duo Phil and Laura Stancil) as “soft rock”, which indicated a potent penchant for sophisticated pop and country-folk vibes. Y’know the kind parlayed by The Eagles, Crosby Stills & Nash, America, Fleetwood Mac et al into successful music careers. There’s enough of the old school rock ’n’ roll veneer in tracks like “Stranger”, “Believe Me” and “Behave” to give Mood Rock that highest PoP recommendation. https://www.facebook.com/philandlu

KRIEF – AUTOMANIC (CULVERT MUSIC)

20 songs – the result of undergoing dark times (which involved the loss of loved ones and a broken relationship) – fill up this double album from Montreal singer-songwriter-musician Patrick Krief (of The Dears). It is rock ’n’ roll personally expressed as art music – idiosyncratic and yet accessible. Synths clash and complement organic elements with a spectral voice anchoring it all. Never meant to be consumed all at once, both sides of Automanic (Red and Blue) require prolonged examination over time to discern its deepest treasures. Brilliant. http://www.krief.ca/

POSTER CHILDREN – DAISYCHAIN REACTIONS (LOTUSPOOL)

Grunge is getting a positive revision where once it was derided for riding on the coat-tails of Nirvana and Pearl Jam. Here’s evidence that in hindsight, there were bands lumped together under the unwieldy umbrella who just made made great rock ’n’ roll records. Case in point – Poster Children’s second album, Daisychain Reactions, produced by the legendary Steve Albini, no less. This 25th anniversary reissue contains album’s twelve songs remastered from the original tapes.

The package features a 12-page retro fanzine with a new, exclusive essay by Jon Fine (author of Your Band Sucks) and reflections on the making of the album by members of the band. In addition, three previously unreleased tracks (an early version of “Where We Live” from the Albini Flower Plower sessions and 1989 demo versions of “If You See Kay” and “Where We Live”) are included.
