Background
Hailing from Louisiana, Brass Bed started out in the mid-2000s parlaying the influence of 70s power pop into sophisticated music. Now pared down to a trio (Christiaan Mader, Jonny Campos and Peter DeHart), In the Yellow Leaf is the band’s fourth LP.
Strengths
There is a deliberate attempt to appeal to the modern indie pop fan here – the Beatles/Beach Boys influences are reduced in lieu of a 90s dream pop vibe. The melodies continue to resonate and there are classic 60s pop flourishes now and then but overall the reverb-drenched noisenik instrumentations somewhat make Brass Bed actually less distinctive from the typical modern rock outfit in 2016.
Highlights
“Maiden Voyage”, “Be Anything”, “December Child”, “Figure It Out”, “Take A Look Around”.
Sounds Like
My Bloody Valentine, Swervedriver, The Shins.
Bottom Line
Though some might quibble with the change in sonic direction, there is still enough songwriting excellence displayed here to please the diehard fan whilst the superficial affinity to modern indie pop (ugh!) may bring in new fans.
