POWER OF POP MUSIC ALBUM REVIEW: JPNSGRLS – DIVORCE

ALBUM REVIEW: JPNSGRLS – DIVORCE

JPNSGRLS-Promo

Background
Vancouver quartet returns with a new LP after a change in personnel. Oliver Mann left the group after recording the album, with new guitarist Colton Lauro now onboard joining vocalist Charlie Kerr, bassist Chris McClellan and drummer Graham Serl. This sophomore effort, follows Circulation, Power of Pop’s Album of 2014.

Strengths
Somewhat more stripped down than Circulation, the songs on Divorce up the ante on sheer visceral power. True to previous releases though, Divorce remains tightly focused on melding the different strands of modern rock into a coherent whole. Thus, elements of post-punk, grunge and hardcore punk and alt-rock are grafted onto a freewheeling celebration of the spirit of rock ’n’ roll. Throughout Kerr is in good voice and his personality carries the LP – bold, brash and artistic.

Highlights
“Oh My God”, “Trojan Horse”, “Bully For You”, “A Comprehensive List of Things I Love”, “Holding Back”.

Sounds Like
Nirvana, The Strokes, Hot Hot Heat, Dinosaur Jr.

Bottom Line
Smart pop to inspire a new generation of edgy rockers.
