ALBUM REVIEW: 7HORSE – LIVIN IN A BITCH OF A WORLD

7Horse-6855

Background
A two-man band conjuring their own unique variation on blues and roots rock, 7Horse are an offshoot of the popular alternative rock band Dada, with group members Joie Calio and Phil Leavitt stepping up with a new sound and approach. In 7Horse, Leavitt tackles drums and lead vocals, while Calio, who plays bass in Dada, shows off his skills on guitar. Livin in a Bitch of a World is the duo’s third LP.

Strengths
Raw and raunchy, soulful and edgy – 7Horse avoids the pitfalls of garage rockers like Black Keys and White Stripes by ensuring the melodies rise above ‘genre’ trappings. Hooks galore never obfuscate the duo’s down and dirty rootsy agenda though.

Highlights
“Two-Stroke Machine”, “Dutch Treat”, “Stick to the Myth”, “She’s so Rock and Roll”.

Sounds Like
Bruce Springsteen, Willie Nile, Peter Wolf, White Denim.

Bottom Line
It’s simple but it’s effective and proof that rock ’n’ roll can still stir the soul when done ‘right’!
