ALBUM REVIEW: BEN ABRAHAM – SIRENS

Ben abraham

Background
Hailing from Melbourne, Australia, Abrahams is a singer-songwriter that has gone from ‘a well-kept hometown secret into an independent artist with a passionate international following’. Signed to respected indie label Secret Canadian & touring the USA with Damon Jurado.

Strengths
A focus on deep songwriting that transcends ‘genres’ and styles. Sympathetic arrangements that emphasise the simplicity of the songs and the texture of Abraham’s vocals. Notwithstanding his stated influences – Thom Yorke/Radiohead – his sound hearkens back to sophisticated 80s pop-rock.

Highlights
“Sirens”, “You and Me”, “To Love Someone”,  “This is on Me” (ft. Sara Barielles).

Sounds Like
Peter Gabriel, Crowded House, Elbow, The Swell Season.

Bottom Line
A bright hope for erudite 80s-channeling pop-rock that bodes well for the future.
