POWER OF POP MUSIC ALBUM REVIEW: BLACK MOUNTAIN – IV

ALBUM REVIEW: BLACK MOUNTAIN – IV

black

Background
Black Mountain is a Canadian rock band from Vancouver, British Columbia. The band is composed of Stephen McBean, Amber Webber, Matt Camirand, Jeremy Schmidt and Joshua Wells. They have released four albums and eight singles.

Strengths
Ostensibly skirting the psychedelic rock revival scene, in fact, Black Mountain use psych-rock as a starting point for their elaborate forays into the heavy music of the late 60s/early 70s. Thus, there are lusty elements of hard rock and stoner rock (and a fair dollop of prog) at play here. The interplay of male-female vocals also marks out Black Mountain’s sounds as something distinct and special.

Highlights
“Mothers of the Sun”, “Florian Saucer Attack”, “Defector”, “You Can Dream” and the rest of the LP!

Sounds Like
Jefferson Airplane, Blue Cheer, Black Sabbath, Neu!

Bottom Line
A talented band that ignores labels and genres to create exciting, vibrant head music for the here and now.
