GEEK OUT!

TRAILER MIX

Just realized that to limit GEEK OUT! to superhero movies only is a rather narrow field and so, we look at trailers of upcoming geek movies that have nothing to do with superheroes. Let’s take a look…

THE WARRIOR’S WAY (3rd Dec 2010)

A warrior-assassin is forced to hide in a small town in the American Badlands after refusing a mission.

Cliched plot to the max alert! Remember Chow Yuen Fatt and Replacement Killers? I suppose the novelty really is the sight of ninjas in the Wild West. Very stylized and somebody has definitely been reading too many Frank Miller Daredevil comics, judging from those action sequences. Still with an Asian leading man (Korean actor Jang Don Gun) alongside Geoffrey (Pirates of the Caribbean) Rush and Kate (Superman Returns) Bosworth, it should generate enough interest in Asia. East meets West indeed.

SOURCE CODE (15th Apr 2011)

An action thriller centered on a soldier who wakes up in the body of an unknown man and discovers he’s part of a mission to find the bomber of a Chicago commuter train.

Quantum Leap meets Deja Vu meets Groundhog’s Day. So what passes for original sci-fi nowadays? For me, the main draw for this movie is director Duncan (Moon) Jones, who makes his major directing debut. That said, the trailer makes the movie look very typical and mundane.  Jake Gyllenhaal and Michelle Monaghan look very good in the lead roles but will the story stand up? I just know that the ending is going to suck. Hoping for the best for Duncan Jones though…

THE GREEN HORNET (14th Jan 2011)

By night, debonair newspaper publisher Britt Reid fights crime as a masked superhero known as The Green Hornet. At his side is martial arts expert Kato.

Green Hornet was never a comic book. It started out as a radio show before “graduating” to the TV screen in the 60s. Of course, it is a lame rip off of the Batman. The Green Hornet TV show had only two things in its favour – the late great Bruce lee (as Kato) and the theme song. In this trailer, both are missing and the movie is going to SUCK! Director Michael Gondry made his reputation with Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind but has done nothing of note since then. With Seth Rogen and Jay Chou horribly miscast, this is a disaster waiting to happen. Avert your eyes, little children.

TRON LEGACY (17th Dec 2010)

A virtual-world worker looks to take down the Master Control Program.

I must confess that I watched TRON back in 1982 and it left no lasting impression except that it had bright and colourful special effects. Heh. For some reason, Disney is banking on this sequel to do the business but online sources are predicting a flop. Who will be right? The trailer reminds me of the original movie – form but no substance. We shall find out soon enough…
