Background
Bob Mould is an American musician, principally known for his work as guitarist, vocalist and songwriter for alternative rock bands Hüsker Dü in the 1980s and Sugar in the 1990s. Patch the Sky is Mould’s thirteenth solo album.
Strengths
Mould continues to live up to his legendary reputation as an expert purveyor of pop tunes fused with guitar punk rock aesthetics. Don’t blame him for inane ‘pop-punk’ but without Mould’s seminal work in Hüsker Dü, Green Day and Blink-182 would not have existed!
Highlights
“Voices In My Head”, “The End of Things”, “Hold On”, “You Say You”.
Sounds Like
Hüsker Dü, Sugar, Guided By Voices, Bob Pollard.
Bottom Line
If you love modern pop-punk, then you must investigate the source. For the diehard Bob Mould, this is a no-brainer. Mould has been mining a rich vein of form in recent times and there are no signs of relenting on Patch the Sky. Recommended!
