EP REVIEW: THE E’S – MEMORIES OF MELANCHOLIC HORSES

Screen Shot 2016-03-25 at 5.58.02 PM

Background
Basically, this is the solo recording project of Saiful Idris of the now-defunct Great Spy Experiment. Seven years in the making with everything you hear performed by Saiful, except for Bani Hidir helping out on drums here and there. Produced by The E’s and Leonard Soosay.

Strengths
Everything you ever loved about mid-2000s pop-rock – the high octane mix of the post-punk revival, sophisticated pop melodies & alt-rock sensibilities. Hypnotic guitar patterns and atmospheric synths combine meaningfully to produce a heady sonic experience.

Highlights
EVERY SONG!

Sounds Like
The Killers, Interpol, The Strokes.

Bottom Line
In the absence of new material from The Great Spy Experiment, Memories of Melancholic Horses is the next best thing. For the Singapore music scene, it is a gentle reminder of how awesome emotionally resonant pop-rock can be. Truly inspiring work.

Information
Available on iTunes and all good digital platforms from 11 April 2016.
