Photo credit : Yong Shu Hoong

When Leslie Low – of revered Singapore band, The Observatory, and previously from the 1990s’ Humpback Oak – was introduced by an ArtScience Museum staff as “the most important singer-songwriter that Singapore has given the world,” he seemed almost embarrassed. But, for the many fans gathered at the museum’s Expression Gallery, such high praise was no fluff.

Thanks to the idiocy of Paramount Pictures, Alex Garland’s Annihilation adaptation was only released in Singapore today via Netflix! Thus, geeks in Singapore are denied the opportunity of watching this imaginative scifi horror movie in all its visual glory. Well, fuck you Paramount!

A third of the way into the 2nd season of the Marvel-Netflix series Jessica Jones, one conclusion becomes unavoidable. The reason that Season 1 worked was down solely to David Tennant’s star turn as Killgrave.

PoP RECOMMENDS | THE NEW ROCK N ROLL : SHELL OF A SHELL – ALREADY THERE [REVIEW]

Shell of a Shell started as a bedroom side project for Chappy Hull that never released any recordings. Eager to play out when he wasn’t busy with other bands, Chappy asked Nick Swafford, Noel Richards, and Dylan Liverman to fill out the sound he had laid out in the earlier demos to be more of a “real” band.

EPICYCLE Jingo Jangle (Cirkle)

Sad to say but I believe that the powerpop genre has been going through a slump for some time now. With the odd notable exceptions, there has not been a genuine powerpop masterpiece this side of the millennium and even since perhaps Jellyfish’s Spilt Milk.
