Mk2 Alt brings Two Sleepy People to Europe: U.S. indie gains production and distribution backing

French alternative distributor mk2 alt has secured European rights to Two Sleepy People, a 90-minute romantic dramedy produced outside the traditional studio system by a group of social-media creators. The acquisition underscores a growing trend: films born on platforms like TikTok and Instagram are increasingly finding theatrical pathways and commercial audiences across Europe.

The film was developed on a shoestring—roughly $100,000 raised from the creators’ own savings and a handful of sponsors—and centers on two colleagues who, after trying a new melatonin gummy, find themselves sharing the same dream each night. The project was written, directed and led on-screen by Baron Ryan (who performs as @americanbaron online) with comedian and content creator Caroline Grossman co-writing and co-starring.

How the movie came together

Two Sleepy People emerged from Creator Camp, a media incubator launched in 2021 to help digital creators turn online followings into original film projects. The network now represents more than 300 creators and, according to the incubator, has amassed over three billion views across its slate of films and branded work. Creator Camp helped shepherd the project from concept through production and into distribution discussions.

mk2 alt, the Paris-based arm focused on nontraditional theatrical fare, opened in April 2024 and quickly made headlines. Within months it released Kaïzen — a feature following YouTube star Inoxtag’s attempt to scale Everest — which reportedly sold around 350,000 tickets in a single day from roughly 1,000 screenings. More recently, the division handled a two-day window for Iron Lung, the horror feature led by YouTuber Markiplier, which went on to generate about $50 million at global box office in February 2026.

For mk2 alt, the new acquisition is part of a deliberate strategy to blend internet-native storytelling with the shared experience of theatrical exhibition. Elisha Karmitz, CEO of mk2, framed the approach as revitalizing cinema for younger audiences by aligning theatrical programming with the kinds of genre stories and creator-driven communities that now shape online attention.

Max Reisinger, Creator Camp’s co-founder and CEO, described the deal as a milestone in pushing “internet cinema” into mainstream venues, saying partnerships with distributors that understand creator communities are essential to proving these films can thrive on the big screen.

Why this matters now

Traditional theatrical distribution has long relied on studio marketing muscle. The success of creator-led releases suggests an alternative model: mobilize existing online communities to bring fans to one-off theatrical events and extended runs. That matters for filmmakers, distributors and cinemas searching for reliable ways to draw younger audiences in an increasingly fragmented media landscape.

Practical takeaways for industry observers:

  • Creator-built audiences can translate to measurable box-office returns when paired with theatrical partners.
  • Low-budget features with strong social footprints reduce financial risk while offering high upside if they break out.
  • Distributors willing to experiment with event-style rollouts or special visas can expedite cross-border launches.

mk2 alt plans to debut Two Sleepy People in France under a special release arrangement before expanding distribution across European territories. If the film follows the trajectory of recent creator-driven releases, exhibitors and distributors will be watching closely — both for box-office performance and for what this means about how the next generation of filmmakers will reach audiences.
