“LEPA(R)K!: A GIG AT TIONG BAHRU PARK” SATURDAY 19 NOVEMBER 2011 FROM 5.00 pm to 10.00 pm (FREE ADMISSION) PRESENTED BY SNAKEWEED STUDIOS AND INCURSIVE PRODUCTIONS ORGANIZED BY TANGLIN-CAIRNHILL CITIZENS’ CONSULTATIVE COMMITTEE
“Lepa(r)k!” welcomes all to Tiong Bahru Park on 19 November 2011 to join in the lively atmosphere and pulsating beats of Singapore indie rock music drummed up by new and familiar bands. A tongue-in-cheek play on the word “lepak”, a local colloquialism meaning to relax and hang out, this event hopes to do just that – attract youths, young adults and the young at heart to the park to enjoy a Saturday evening filled with a variety of original sounds and cutting edge tunes from some of our finest homegrown bands in the independent music scene. The handpicked line-up for the event includes buzzed-about Singapore bands Cheating Sons, In Each Hand A Cutlass, Obedient Wives Club, Ingride and Run Neon Tiger, and is topped off by headlining act and local sensations, Plainsunset. If good music and an exciting rock show is a prizefight, then this lineup of 6 stellar bands will surely pull no punches. Thrilled to be part of the event, Mr Norsham Husaini from Plainsunset says, “We are so honoured to be playing and headlining this event. We are hoping to introduce some new songs in our performance that are going to be in our next record due to be released next year.”
This event is a first of its kind organised by a grassroots’ organisation. The idea arose from a conversation between Ms Indranee Rajah, Adviser to the Tanjong Pagar GROs and Mr Daniel Sassoon of Incursive Productions in which he gave feedback on the growth of independent music in Singapore and the need for more local platforms to showcase such music. Ms Indranee, who is also the Chairman of the MICA GPC, offered a community platform to showcase local independent music. Said Ms Indranee “I believe that Singapore has a lot of homegrown musical talent which is not sufficiently appreciated. Having a community platform to showcase such talent would be an excellent way to allow Singaporeans to appreciate our local talent more.”
The organizer, Tanglin-Cairnhill Citizens’ Consultative Committee (CCC), a grassroots organization under the People’s Association, is happy to partner renowned expertise in the independent music scene to outreach to diverse segments of the community through music. Mr Daniel Yew, Organising Chairman, shares his thoughts, “We were thrilled when our Adviser, Ms Indranee Rajah broached the idea with us. The grassroots are always seeking interesting ways to engage the community and this event is quite a first for us. It is an excellent way to increase engagement of the young, add more colour to the happenings in our heartlands, while championing our local artistes; and all done through the fun, exciting universal language of music!”.
Mr Leonard Soosay from Snakeweed Studios also chimed in, “The bands on the bill for Lepa(r)k! are some of the most exciting acts around, and could definitely stand proud playing alongside any similar internationally renowned bands. I hope people, especially the residents living around the area, bring their pets and picnic baskets and spend an evening chilling with us; and come and see for themselves how much talent and good music there is to be found locally.”
