A recording of Elvis Costello’s performance at the Liverpool Philharmonic Hall. Part of his Detour Show tour where Costello plays solo acoustic versions of select songs from his immense discography, using the “Lupe-O-Tone” television set to tell the stories behind the songs.
The mark of a effective songwriter is the ability to strip every piece of artifice and still succeed in communicating the concepts and emotions of the bare song. Costello does this very well of course, though it’s fair to say that his earlier ‘new wave’ songs like “Red Shoes”, “Accidents Will Happen” & “Watching the Detectives” lose something without a full band backing.
That said, much of his latter-day compositions certainly rise up to the occasion, the added sophistication enhanced in the simple delivery. In addition, nothing quite compares to Costello sharing his stories behind the songs – he is a natural born communicator. Costello is joined on certain tracks by Rebecca and Megan Lovell of Larkin Poe.
“Church Underground”, “45”, “Alison”, “Ghost Train”, “You’re Leaving”, “A Good Year For The Roses”.
A no-brainer for the diehard fan and essential viewing for all aspiring singer-songwriters out there.
