The Block the Merger Coalition filed an emergency motion to oppose Paramount’s proposed acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery, according to Variety reporting that the group asked a court for leave to weigh in.
Variety said the coalition’s filing seeks permission to submit an amicus brief ahead of a California court hearing connected to the deal, a step the groups say would let outside parties present legal arguments about the transaction.
The motion was described by Variety as an “emergency” request timed for a hearing scheduled in California the same day, a procedural move to try to influence the court’s handling of the transaction challenge.
Block the Merger is a coalition of consumer and competition groups that has opposed major media consolidations; Variety reported the coalition asked the court to consider antitrust and public-interest arguments against the deal.
Legal filings that request amicus status do not themselves change a case’s outcome, but they allow outside groups to submit briefs that the judge may read when considering the parties’ motions, the Variety story explained.
It remains up to the court whether to accept the coalition’s request and to what extent the judge will rely on any amicus arguments during the hearing.
