ALBUM REVIEW: CHEAP TRICK – BANG, ZOOM, CRAZY… HELLO

Background
Cheap Trick is an American pop-rock band from Rockford, Illinois, formed in 1973, now consisting of Robin Zander (vocals, rhythm guitar), Rick Nielsen (lead guitar), Tom Petersson (bass guitar) and Daxx Nielsen (drums). In its forty-three years of existence, the band has remained true to its musical agenda i.e. a blend of pop, punk and even metal in a way that is instantly catchy and recognisable. This LP is the band’s first without longtime drummer Bun E. Carlos.

Strengths
Whilst nothing ground-breaking, Bang, Zoom, Crazy… Hello demonstrates Cheap Trick’s ability to maintain a consistency in their patented sound. They continue to provide a benchmark of that special hybrid of pop melodies and rock constructs without coming across too clichéd.

Highlights
“Heat On the Line”, “No Direction Home”, “Blood Red Lips”, “The Sun Never Sets”.

Sounds Like
Cheap Trick!

Bottom Line
It’s always heartening to witness a ‘legacy’ band like Cheap Trick doing what they were born to do, and not caring about what the rest of the world thinks. This is an enjoyable album for all rock lovers, if you can listen without prejudice.
