GEEK OUT! TERMINATOR: GENISYS IS A CONFUSED & ILL-ADVISED ATTEMPT TO REVIVE A BILLION DOLLAR FRANCHISE

Terminator-Genisys-T-800

I really only liked the original.

The Terminator (1984) was a game-changer in scifi genre movies, stringing together themes that have inspired countless other movies. Every succeeding sequel has failed to match the brilliance of the original, even if the first sequel (Judgment Day) is still rated very highly. But since director James Cameron left the franchise, the quality of the work has been shoddy and Genisys might be the worst. Primarily because it is such an obviously cynical attempt to appeal to the franchise faithful.

In that light, perhaps it’s no surprise that Genisys fails artistically and creatively, to justify its existence whatsoever. At least one might argue that the third (Rise of the Machines) and the fourth (Salvation) instalments were genuine attempts to continue the narrative. Genisys, however, is a complete mess – functioning as some kind of misguided collage where time travel is utilised as a device to mangle the original storyline beyond recognition.

It is not cleverly done at all – it’s just a convenient excuse to get killing machines into battle and throw issues of continuity out of the window AND above all, exploit a very recognisable brand name! The producers have indicated their confidence in the new retcon with subsequent sequels to be released in 2017 and 2018 respectively.

GEEK OUT! ANT-MAN INTERNATIONAL TRAILER PROMISES MUCH FROM THE END OF PHASE 2

antman0007

Ant-Man opens on 16th July and might be a good indicator of where Phase 3 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is headed. This new international trailer (from Japan) highlights a little bit of our protagonist Scott Lang’s back story and also some history regarding Hank Pym and the Ant-Man suit.

By all accounts, it appears that Ant-Man is set up to take over from Iron Man in certain ways even as Robert Downey Jr winds down his MCU involvement. This movie is looking funny, exciting and a key MCU jumping point. Expecting the post-credits scenes to be epic!

Here are six new releases – spread across the three streaming services (based in Singapore) – that get the Power of Pop Recommendation!

YOUNG BUFFALO – HOUSE

KOJI PRESENTS RAW HARD ROCKIN’ TRIBUTE TO PULP FICTION

Koji

If there’s one inescapable fly in the S-ROCK ointment, it’s the lack of meaningful lyricism, the fear of exploring concepts beyond the purely emotional (the ‘affairs of the heart’ cliche). Thankfully, that is not the case with Koji’s new free track – “Mrs Mia Wallace” – which functions as a tribute to the Pulp Fiction characters famously played by Uma Thurman in the Quentin Tarantino classic.

There’s something wonderfully shambolic about the quartet’s hard rockin’ agenda – channeling Wolfmother via Led Zep – although the quality of the vocals might need sprucing up. But one cannot quibble too much with the infectious riffs that dominate “Mrs Mia Wallace” and that is one memorable take-away. Download the track for free now!

ForeignArchitects

Foreign Architects are a Perth based duo featuring singer/songwriter Matt Burke and percussionist Andrew Barnett. The duo will play Beerfest Asia 2015 (together with Singaporean and other Aussie bands) on Sunday 28th June. This is part of the musical exchange between Singapore & Western Australian music scenes which has been ongoing for the last couple of years. Thanks to Timbre Music (Beerfest organisers), we got in touch with Matt Burke/Foreign Architects for a short interview.

Why is it important for you to play in Singapore?

This is an important opportunity for us to gain international exposure and start to build a fan-base outside our home city. Singapore is a country we have always wanted to travel to and getting to bring our music to Singapore is a dream come true for us.

POWER OF POP INTERVIEW – DEON TOH

DEON

It’s always a pleasure working with singer-songwriter Deon Toh cos the man is genuine, down to earth and serious about his art. His new album is one of the best I have heard in 2015 and thus, it was illuminating to pick his brains for the stories behind the songs. It’s really in-depth so buckle up!

What was the primary inspiration behind making Oceans a concept album?

As a songwriter, I’ve always viewed the creation of an album as the process of creating a standalone piece of work; a piece of art. I’m one of those musicians who still believe in coming up with a good 10 songs LP, and making sure that those songs make a collective statement.

As such, I did not craft singles and slap them together, but rather, I crafted an entire album. With that intention in mind, I dedicated myself to the challenge of coming up with something magical.

No disrespect or offense to musicians who launch singles, or demos, or EPs that are just a collection of unrelated songs (there’s nothing wrong with that); on my part, this was a personal challenge to push my songwriting limits and come up with a concept album.

The theme of circles and cycles seems alien to Singapore where the seasons remain constant – so is the music a product of travelling beyond Singapore?

I traveled with the intention of personal growth. I wanted to discover more about myself and see the world, and to understand the value of coming home better. Back home, life was changing at a rapid pace, with my graduation from university, evolving relationships, and aging parents. I had constant emotional and rationality debates, epiphanies. And at the end of everything, I walked away with a deeper understanding of myself.

What was the motivation behind incorporating post-rock and ambient electronica into your pop-rock sonic agenda?

During this period, my band and I had the privilege to witness one of the best musical performances during an Iceland Airwaves showcase at Canadian Music Week. We stumbled upon singer-songwriter, Asgeir, and fell in love with his brand of music. He incorporates loads of ambient electronica, which influenced us eventually.

The post-rock aspect came out of listening to loads of music from local band Caracal. We are huge fans of the band, and also spent a short period traveling with them, it was fun.

As for my pop-rock roots, I still listen to loads of Rachael Yamagata, Brooke Fraser, and Coldplay, which always keeps me grounded to my roots.

PoPTV: EDITORS PROLONG THE DEATH THROES OF THE POST-PUNK REVIVAL WITH NEW SINGLE MARCHING ORDERS

EDITORS

I am sick of the post-punk revival – it is one of the worst aspects of millennial pop culture – and it’s already been 15 years. C’mon!

This is compounded by the fact that I absolutely loved the original 80s post-punk scene. Thus, to hear the works of Joy Division, Bauhaus and Echo & the Bunnymen being constantly dragged through the mud by inferior bands like Editors is painful. Listen to the new doom-laden single “Marching Orders” to fully understand my disdain for this kind of derivative drivel. This must end!

When oh when will the 90s rock revival (and therefore retro-60s) begin?

TURN TURN TURN: DEON’S SOPHOMORE EFFORT OCEANS SIGNALS A NEW SEASON FOR SINGAPORE ROCK

DEON - Cover

When one listens to Oceans, it becomes abundantly crystal clear that for singer-songwriter Deon Toh, it’s all about the music. In this digital age, Toh has gone against the grain to approach the album as a viable artistic expression, like in the days of yore. There are eleven one-word titled tracks on this, his follow-up to the well-received Antiphobic, bookended by “Circles” and “Cycles”, which speak to the impact of seasons in our lives.

There is beauty, grace and strength in compositions like “Summer”, “Fall”, “Winter” and “Spring” where Toh is able to conjure the experience of the seasons, whether it is something physical or symbolic. The over-riding emotion might be melancholy but it is not defeatist but reflective. Whether it is in the piano harmonic structures, fragile guitar arpeggios, arranged percussion, ambient soundscapes or Toh’s falsetto, there is a deliberate intent to evoke a sense of longing and yearning in the presence of natural splendour.

It is a significant achievement that Oceans is an album one can (and MUST) listen to from beginning to end and then to start all over again. A gorgeous song cycle that once again sets the bar higher for Singapore artists to emulate.

DEON launches Oceans on July 10th at the Substation. Tickets are now available from http://peatix.com/event/96846. Pre-order the album from iTunes and download the single “Summer”.

GEEK OUT! GAME OF THRONES SEASON FIVE DIGS A DEEPER HOLE FOR THE STORY TO GET LOST IN

JonSnowDeath

By now, it becomes abundantly clear that George RR Martin and the writers of Game of Thrones have no clue what to do. Instead of intriguing plot lines and character development, the TV series is a sequence of scenes with maximum shock value to incite internet buzz and cultivate some kind of false belief that Game of Thrones is one of the best TV shows ever.

It’s not.

Remember LOST? A series that began almost perfectly before getting entangled by too many convoluted plot lines that were thrown up just to keep interest at fever pitch but without any intention of resolving anything? Well, that’s happening with Game of Thrones. Too many plot lines going nowhere. Instead of character development, shock deaths, loss of limbs, blindness, rape etc are dumped on characters to generate sympathy and create the illusion of edginess.

Season 5 proves quite conclusively that the TV series is as clueless as the books in trying to tell a coherent story. The abuse of Sansa Stark, the immolation of Princess Shireen, the public shaming of Queen Cersei, the blinding of Arya Stark, the overthrow of Queen Daenerys Targaryen, the deaths of Mance Rayder, Stannis Baratheon and even Jon Snow (above) is simply shock overdrive in order to mask a lack of narrative ideas.

Remember the finale of Season 1? Daenerys turned the tragic death of Khal Drogo into an epiphany with the birth of her three dragons but even that promise proved hollow. Every subsequent season has delivered disappointment after disappointment as one by one, main protagonists are killed off until there’s hardly anyone left to root for in this abysmally, depressing story called Game of Thrones.

Now, when is Season Six?

GEEK OUT! JURASSIC WORLD PROVES ONCE MORE THAT THE FRANCHISE IS ALL

Jurassic-World

You see that image above? That’s really what modern day blockbusters have done with plot, characterisation and narrative logic. Gobbled it all up in the name of box office green. Special effects rather than good writing create ‘tension’ and ‘drama’. This visual feast has audiences going ga-ga over the empty spectacle while ignoring plot holes & shallow one-dimensional characters. But it’s all okay, it’s only a movie so relax, why don’t you?

Well, remember that you reap what you sow. All the box office millions earned by movies like Jurassic World and less we forget, the Transformers franchise only leads to more similar movies. As it is, movie studios are terrified about releasing ‘genre’ films unless it’s a sequel, reboot or book/comic/TV adaptation and the mega-success of Jurassic World simply cements that opinion.

There’s little point in going into these issues in detail but suffice to say that: –

1. Bryce Dallas Howard’s character spends the entire film in high heels whilst running and battling dinosaurs.

2. The manner in which the ‘evil’ dinosaur is defeated by the ‘good’ dinosaurs is preposterous.

But why bother about making sense when you can make US$500 million in a weekend instead?

*Sigh*

DEON RELEASES SOPHOMORE EFFORT OCEANS: PRE-ORDER, MUSIC VIDEO & SINGLE NEWS

DEON - Cover

DEON releases his 2nd album Oceans on 10th July.

iTunes pre-order will begin on 17th June, and physical copies of the album as well as the digital release of the album will happen on the 10th of July. A music video of first single “Summer” will also be released on 17th June on DEON’s Youtube channel.

The album will be launched on the 10th July at the Substation.

As with DEON’s debut Antiphobic, Oceans is filled to the brim with melodic power but it’s clear that DEON has upped the ante with regards to production and arrangement as well as a conceptual thread that runs through the album. Review to come.

GEEK OUT! THIS ELRIC ADAPTATION CUTS CLOSE TO THE BONE

Elric Vol. 2

Calling this second volume of adaptations of Michael Moorcock’s classic Elric series Stormbringer is a mite confusing, when in fact this graphic novel actually concludes the plotline of Elric of Melniboné. That minor complaint aside, Elric Vol. 2 definitely maintains the cutting edge intensity and emotional depth that made Vol. 1 so satisfying as a modern take of the saga of the doomed albino emperor.

In summary, Elric moves heaven, earth and hell in a desperate attempt to rescue his lover Cymoril from the evil clutches of her brother, the traitorous Yyrkoon. Along the way, Elric receives the ‘gift’ of the soul-drinking black blade, Stormbringer and discovers that getting what he wants can come at a tremendous cost, especially when one is dealing with demons. This time round, writer Julien Blondel is joined by Jean-Luc Cano and the duo do an excellent job in conveying the other-worldliness of the Melnibonean characters.

Forty years old this story might be but the relevance of Moorcock’s disturbing commentary on decadent power remains potent.

REEL TO REAL: LOVE & MERCY – A MOVIE OF TWO HALVES

Paul Dano

If you know nothing about Brian Wilson and the Beach Boys, I suggest that you swot up before watching Love & Mercy. Cuz it will get bewildering. Or maybe that’s the point of it all!

This biopic of Wilson elects to focus on two very specific periods in the singer-songwriter’s life. First, from about 1964 – 1967, where Wilson had suffered an anxiety attack and ‘retired’ from live performances to concentrate on recording and producing resulting in the masterpiece Pet Sounds LP and the failed attempt to delivered the radical Smile album (whereupon Wilson basically withdrew from the world). Second, in the 80s regarding his guardianship under dubiously abusive therapist Eugene Landy and his budding romance with Melinda Ledbetter (whom he would later marry).

GEEK OUT! James Cameron says Terminator: Genisys is ‘official’ third film in saga

The director of the first two Terminator movies has said new movie has ‘reinvigorated’ the franchise and audiences should dismiss the third and fourth instalments

Interesting endorsement from Terminator’s “Daddy”. Apparently, he loved the twist – already spoilt by the trailers – of John Conner becoming the villainous terminator! Presumably that twist was needed to reinvigorate the franchise – we’ll see whether the box office agrees.

GEEK OUT! MIRACLEMAN BOOK THREE: OLYMPUS – ONE OF THE GREATEST SUPERHERO STORIES EVER GETS THE OVERPRICED DELUXE TREATMENT

MM3

The superhero character called Miracleman has always had a troubled existence.

Born in the UK in 1954 as Marvelman due to an American lawsuit, revived in 1983 in revolutionary fashion by Alan Moore, threatened by Marvel Comics, necessitating a change of name when licensed in the USA, discontinued due to bankruptcy of publisher and complicated ownership disputes. The character remained in limbo for 20 odd years before being acquired by Marvel Comics!

Which brings us to the present day, where Miracleman Book Three: Olympus completes Alan Moore’s (credited as ‘The Original Writer’) critically acclaimed run on the character. As with the other Miracleman collections, the actual reprints make up less than half of the hardcover book with the remainder being ‘bonus’ features (e.g. original artwork and scripts) with the hefty US$39.99 price tag being somewhat unjustified.

Worst still, Marvel has elected to incorporate two stories that have no place being in the same book as this storyline. Seriously, what is the relevance? No wonder Moore is pissed off with Marvel. This is almost as atrocious behaviour as DC’s cash-grab with Before Watchmen. What. The. Fuck.

In the final analysis, Olympus is probably next to Watchmen, the finest superhero story ever told – never to be surpassed (not forgetting artist John Totleben’s amazing work). Narrated from Miracleman’s perspective, it is the logical response to the question – “What if Superman really existed” and also the perfect ending to the Miracleman story. But of course, due to commercial considerations, it is not.

But aside from these objections, if you have never read Olympus, then I highly recommend you pick up this book. Just do me a favour and put the book down once you have finished with the story itself and ignore the ‘bonus’ features. Or better yet, read the story all over again.

GEEK OUT! GAME OF THRONES FAN THEORIES AND PREDICTIONS

JONSNOW

With Game of Thrones well into its fifth season, the popular HBO television show is going strong and holding its audience captive every week with its unpredictable story and multi-layered characters. Considering the intricate twists and turns it takes, it is no surprise that fans have formed various theories about their favorite characters—no matter how absurd they may seem! Here are just a couple of those theories:

The Identity of Jon Snow’s Parents (The R + L = J Theory)

“R + L = J” literally translates to “Rhaegar + Lyanna = Jon,” meaning that Jon Snow isn’t Ned’s son, but the product of an affair between Rhaegar Targaryen and Lyanna Stark. This theory gained steam during this season’s episode “Sons of the Harpy,” when Stannis commented that it was out of Ned’s character to defy his wife Catelyn. If this birth equation is true, it means Jon is the true heir to the Iron Throne.

Tyrion Lannister is Really a Targaryen

Another heated debate in the Game of Thrones realm is who the real father of Tyrion Lannister is. Some fans believe it to be King Aerys Targaryen after he forced himself on Tyrion’s mother, thus making Tyrion Lannister a Targaryen. The theory continues that Tywin, being enraged at the situation, used a drug on Joanna Lannister to abort the baby. While this attempt failed, it can explain the dwarfism in Tyrion.

Dragonglass is Actually Dragon Poop

This one reads more like a biology lesson than a fan theory, but it is still interesting to consider nonetheless. A Reddit user hypothesized that dragonglass is nothing more than dragon waste. The theory goes that dragons tunnel through the ground and eat sand. This sand then enters the dragon’s fiery stomach and heats up and forms glass. Once this molten glass exits the dragon’s body, it cools and the people forge great weapons out of it.

Jon Snow is Azor Ahai

“The Prince That Was Promised” has long been a mystery to Game of Thrones fans but some feel they know the true identity of the great Azor Ahai. Melisandre’s theory is that it is Stannis Baratheon who is the true Azor Ahai but readers have noticed that her visions of Azor Ahai are not a clear cut as she thinks. A growing faction of fans are speculating that it is actually Jon Snow who matches the red priestess’ visions. Though it is also possible that Azor Ahai is three people after Daenerys’ vision where Rhaegar claims that “the dragon shall have three heads.”

Syrio and Jaqen H’ghar Are the Same Person

Is Syrio dead? That seems to be the heart of this fan theory. When Syrio was last seen by fans, he was about to face off against Meryn. In the end, it is Meryn that walks out alone and we assume he is victorious. However, no one actually sees Syrio die, which is the fuel that perpetuates this theory. The connections between Syrio and Jaqen H’ghar may not be the end-all to the argument but take a couple factors into account: the similar phrasing when they speak, the special attention paid to Arya, and even the ease in which Jaqen figured out Arry was actually Arya Stark. It makes you think!

Game of Thrones is full of surprises, and there is no sign that it will stop anytime soon. Some of these theories may seem a little ridiculous but given the plot twists and shock factors of the past seasons, nothing seems impossible. Make sure you keep up with the show on HBO Go or DTV up until the season finale later this month for more of this excitement!
