After teasing a couple of excellent singles (“Ginger Ale” and “Baby” in particular), the debut EP of Vancouver’s Hotel Mira has dropped today.
For fans of JPNSGRLS, this is really a continuation of Charlie Kerr’s sonic agenda viz. garage punk-fuelled melodic gems with quirky yet poignant lyrical sentiments.
The new songs on display – like “Beautiful Thing, I Am Terrified”, “That Man” and “Stockholm” – match the tuneful intensity of the singles, while expanding the band’s musical palate somewhat.
This is most evident on the insightful “Stockholm” with Kerr fronting a soulful number that slow grooves then explodes itself into the affections of anyone with a heart. Gorgeous!
All told, a more than solid debut that demonstrates that the reinvention of JPNSGRLS into Hotel Mira is a total success.
… still there’s more …
