Netflix has confirmed it is developing a third installment in Adam Sandler’s Grown Ups series, reviving the ensemble comedy for the streaming era. The announcement, made during Netflix’s Upfront presentation on Wednesday, signals another high-profile film moving from theatrical roots to a streamer-led release — and it arrives as Sandler’s projects continue to draw large audiences online.
Grown Ups 3 will be directed by Kyle Newacheck, who has collaborated with Sandler on recent projects. The screenplay is credited to Adam Sandler and long-time collaborator Tim Herlihy; Sandler, Jackie Sandler, Jack Giarraputo and Herlihy are listed as producers, with Kevin Grady and Judit Maull as executive producers.
Who’s returning
The threequel is expected to reunite the original core cast: David Spade, Rob Schneider, Chris Rock and Kevin James are all set to come back alongside Sandler. The franchise centers on a group of childhood friends whose reunion sets off a summer of comic mishaps — a formula that made the first two films box-office successes in their theatrical runs.
Directed previously by Dennis Dugan, the first Grown Ups (2010) earned roughly $272 million worldwide, followed by Grown Ups 2 (2013) with about $247 million globally. Moving the series to Netflix reflects the platform’s long-running relationship with Sandler, which has produced more than ten films and other projects under a multi-year deal.
Why Netflix is the natural home
The streaming platform has become Sandler’s primary outlet for new comedies, and his recent releases have performed strongly on streaming metrics. For example, one of last year’s Sandler-led titles set a Nielsen record by logging 2.89 billion minutes viewed in its first week — a reminder that Netflix can deliver immediate, large-scale viewership outside the theatrical window.
- Director: Kyle Newacheck
- Writers: Adam Sandler, Tim Herlihy
- Producers: Adam Sandler, Jackie Sandler, Jack Giarraputo, Tim Herlihy
- Executive producers: Kevin Grady, Judit Maull
- Returning cast: Adam Sandler, David Spade, Rob Schneider, Chris Rock, Kevin James
- Previous global grosses: Grown Ups (≈ $272M), Grown Ups 2 (≈ $247M)
The move highlights two broader industry trends: legacy comedy franchises being revived for streaming audiences, and major talents deepening partnerships with platforms that can guarantee scale on release day. For Netflix, another Sandler title represents both low-risk branding and proven viewer draw; for the franchise, it offers immediate access to subscribers rather than a conventional box-office rollout.
Netflix has not yet provided a production timeline or release date for Grown Ups 3. As development proceeds, the film’s creative direction and distribution strategy will be watched closely by studios and streamers alike — particularly as they weigh theatrical releases against platform premieres for established brands.
