Why does this exist? Well, a couple of reasons.
— Sequels are profitable.
— Trilogies are in vogue
— A cash in on Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (where the version of Batman is inspired by The Dark Knight Returns)
Oh, you wanted artistic reasons.
Based on this first issue, I am firing blanks.
Sure, the art (from Andy Kubert and Klaus Janson) is exquisite, the story does make strong references to the police brutality crisis currently brewing in the US and there’s a tasty sting in the tail BUT unless you are a massive fan of Miller’s vision of the DC Universe, this whole exercise seems a tad forced.
Stranger still, there’s a Miller-pencilled back up story featuring the Atom (signified as the Dark Knight Universe version of the shrinking hero) which, whilst having relevance to the story at hand, comes across like a filler.
That all said, thanks to the surprising denouement, there is impetus to keep going.
Yes, guess I am a sucker too.
