… DRIBBLING …

THEY DON’T MAKE THEM LIKE THEY USED TO…

Haha yes, …dribbling… is back! No, I am NOT going to talk about the recently concluded Premiership season or the Champions League Final but I just want to say a short word or two about remembering a memorable moment in the history of the UEFA European Championship.

The 1988 edition hosted in Germany is probably my favourite major football tournament ever. The Netherlands beat USSR in the final 2-0 and Dutch striker Marco Van Basten (above) emerged from that competition as the best player on the planet. Who could forget how he almost single-handedly destroyed the English (making Tony Adams look like the donkey he is), delivering the last minute semi-final winner against the host nation and then to cap it all off, scoring a wonder goal in the final itself.

Since then, football has slowly but systemically been undermined by the billionaires playing fantasy football for real, their overpaid prima donna cheating players and not even to mention the corrupted football associations and the inept referees – it’s no longer about the glory of the game only the moolah. Sad but true. Sigh. In any case, I’ll still have my memories of what it used to be like…
