COME ON YOU SPURS! YOUNG TEAM PUTS FIVE PAST GILLINGHAM

Clearly, progress in the EFL Cup this season is not top priority for manager Mauricio Pochettino after he selected a completely different eleven from the one that beat Sunderland over the weekend in the Premier League.

What was evident was that it does appear that there is strength in depth in this Spurs squad to handle the rigours of four competitions – not to mention the prolonged absence of Harry Kane. In that context, Vincent Janssen’s first goal for Spurs, via a penalty, was a welcome relief for all concerned at Tottenham.

Janssen’s goal was sandwiched between two strikes from captain Christian Eriksen and one each from Josh Onomah and Erik Lamela. By all accounts, this young team – which included seven reserves – was given a good run-out. Pochettino has promised to stick with this young team for the 4th round tie at Anfield – now that should be interesting.
