Bonobo’s new album Distance in Static features Arooj Aftab and Nilüfer Yanya

Simon Green, performing as Bonobo, returns with a new studio album, Distance in Static, arriving September 11 on Ninja Tune. The release brings a string of high-profile vocal collaborators and a lead single already familiar from his DJ sets — and Green will present a revamped live show on a North American tour this November.

On Distance in Static, Bonobo expands his signature blend of downtempo electronica and organic instrumentation by working with a diverse roster of vocalists. Contributors include Pakistani composer-singer Arooj Aftab, British soul artist Joy Crookes, indie songwriter Nilüfer Yanya, Japanese folk musician Ichiko Aoba, and Nicole Miglis of Hundred Waters, among others. The collaboration list signals a continued shift toward layered, song-led pieces rather than club-only tracks.

Green says the album title reflects a change in perspective: earlier material has become a reference point for newer listeners, and this record is about trying to discern meaningful signals amid a lot of background noise. That idea threads through arrangements that move between subtle instrumental passages and more direct vocal moments.

Since his 2022 record Fragments, Bonobo has stayed active beyond studio work — contributing to the soundtrack for the anime series Lazarus alongside Kamasi Washington and Floating Points. The new album’s lead single, “Me and You”, has already been a regular in his recent club appearances and will feature in the upcoming live presentation.
