MAN UTD 2 SPURS 0

I did not even bother to watch this game. Even when a friend told me that he was supporting Spurs (he’s a Celtic fan and hates Spurs) against Man Utd, I told him flatly that there was no way Spurs would ever win at Old Trafford. The facts supported this – Spurs have not won in the league at Old Trafford since 1989 (!) when Gary Lineker (!) scored the winner. Of course, the fact that referees tend to be biased towards Man Utd (and against Spurs) at Old Trafford was a factor as well – remember the Mendes goal that was chalked off by referee Mark Clattenburg? I’m sure Man Utd fans have forgotten that incident totally.

VILLAGERS – LIVE IN SINGAPORE

Irish singer-songwriter Conor O’Brien is the brains behind Villagers, whose debut album – Becoming A Jackal – has been favorably compared to Bright Eyes, Sparklehorse, The Frames and Leonard Cohen and also nominated for a Mercury Prize! Not bad for a band that made their first live appearance only 2 years ago. Well, music fans are in for a treat as O’Brien makes his way to the intimate surroundings of the Esplanade Recital Studios on 31st January 2011 for a live performance that promises to be truly memorable (remember the Lloyd Cole and Patrick Watson gigs? Awesome!).

THE EVENT SEASON 1

Episode 6: Loyalty

This latest episode of the scifi-conspiracy thriller could just as well have been entitled, “The Sacrifice of Agent Lee”. Simon Lee (Ian Anthony Dale) – the ALIEN mole in the CIA – finally has his cover blown to high hell as he assists ALIEN leader Sophia (Laura Innes) escape from a tracking device placed within her body as she attempts to meet with her colleague, Thomas (Clifton Collins Jr).

DEXTER SEASON 5

Episode 5: First Blood

After Lumen Ann Pierce (Julia Stiles) finally puts her trust in Dexter with the revelation about her other abusers, we assumed that Dexter would aid Lumen to avenge herself on them. Even the episode name seemed to suggest something of that nature. However, as it turned out, it’s nothing of the sort. Again, Dexter’s emotional involvement (this time with Lumen’s plight) somewhat muddles up his critical thinking and he almost kills yet another “innocent” man.

VAMPIRE WEEKEND – LIVE IN SINGAPORE

Okay, do you want the good news or bad news first? Can’t decide? Well, let’s just say that if you hate NYC quartet Vampire Weekend and accuse the band of essentially having only two songs (Oxford Comma and A-Punk), then you’d be elated to know that Ezra Koenig, Chris Baio, Rostam Batmanglij and Chris Tomson basically went down like gangbusters, as a packed Esplanade Concert Hall went apeshit from the moment the band stepped onto the stage and sustained hyped up levels of enthusiasm for the remainder of the concert. Or maybe not.

FLAMING LIPS – LIVE IN SINGAPORE

The Flaming Lips – “one of the bands you have to see before you die” – or so UK rock mag Q claimed in 2002. Considering the Lips formed in 1983 (around the nucleus of Wayne Coyne and Michael Ivins) and spent its early years playing psych-rock freakouts heavily influenced by Pink Flood and the 13th Floor Elevators, its pretty amazing that it is still thriving in 2010, recording on a major label (Warners) and selling out gigs worldwide!

THE ROLLING STONES

LADIES AND GENTLEMEN THE ROLLING STONES DVD (Eagle Vision)

This legendary Rolling Stones concert film, shot over four nights in Texas during the Exile On Main Street tour in 1972, was released in cinemas for limited engagements in 1974 and has remained largely unseen since. Now, restored and remastered, Ladies and Gentlemen makes its first authorized appearance on DVD.

NO ORDINARY FAMILY SEASON 1

Episode 4: No Ordinary Vigilante

Okay so I’m watched this episode between two episodes of The Event, so I suppose that this light-hearted family dramedy is going to suffer in comparison. So if the show lacks an edge, maybe that’s part of the agenda. Which is why I’m getting bored of the series already. Unless something really interesting happens soon.

SPURS 1 EVERTON 1

It seems the Premier League is conspiring against Spurs this week. After that epic 3-4 reverse at the San Siro in midweek, Spurs was forced to play an early kick-off barely three days later. Is this fair? After all, Man Utd played the same night and was rewarded with a Sunday match. Hurm.

THE EVENT SEASON 1

Episode 3: Protect Them From the Truth

The Event is fast challenging Fringe as the sci-fi TV series to replace LOST in TV geeks’ affections. Well, of course, whilst Fringe is in its third season, the Event is only at its third episode but is proving no slouch at developing multiple plots, puzzling mysteries and numerous twists and turns along the way.

FLAMING LIPS/RAVEONETTES – LIVE IN SINGAPORE

Back in the late 90s, I had coined the term “widerscreen rock” to describe cutting edge bands whom I’d felt were producing music that cover a wide variety of genres, adopting an “everything and the kitchen sink” approach. This music was epic in scope, yet to able evoke very personal emotions. In 1999, with the release of The Soft Bulletin – my album of the 90s – I believed that the Flaming Lips was at the vanguard of this “movement” (yeah, alright, it was only in my head but that’s often good enough for me).
