Martha Skye Murphy and Roy Montgomery, two figures from adjacent corners of the experimental music world, will release their first collaborative album via AD 93 on August 7. The record, titled Nebular, arrives after a series of joint projects — including a 2024 single and live work during Montgomery’s 2023 London residency — that have quietly built anticipation among fans of ambient guitar and vocal experimentation.
The lead preview, a seven-minute piece called Cloudburst, is out now with visuals by Simon English, offering the clearest glimpse yet of the duo’s method: slow-moving guitar layers meeting Murphy’s textural singing. The single follows last year’s shared release “Need” and several live encounters that laid the groundwork for a full-length collaboration.
Murphy describes their creative relationship as highly intuitive — a working shorthand that lets the pair build compositions without exhaustive explanation. Their sessions favor layering and multitracking, and a tolerance for rough edges that keeps the music immediate rather than polished. The result is an album shaped by gradual development: small gestures accumulating into broader sonic gestures.
Montgomery’s profile has also seen renewed attention recently. Once a cult touchstone among instrumental guitar composers, he has been cited by newer acts and featured in broader outlets over the past few years. He issued an archival collection, Guitars Infernal, in February, while Murphy released her debut LP, Um, on AD 93 in 2024 — moves that set the stage for this partnership to reach a wider audience.
- Nebular — track list:
- 01 At Dawn
- 02 Cloudburst
- 03 Satellites Against the Milky Sky
- 04 The Play of Light and Dark
- 05 At Dusk
Listeners can expect the album to emphasize atmospheric guitar underpinnings and voice as an instrument rather than a straightforward narrative vehicle. That emphasis on texture and pacing — rather than verse-chorus structure — is a throughline from the single to the rest of the record.
Release day is set for August 7 via AD 93, and the album will be available in physical and digital formats, including standard streaming services and independent outlets where the label typically distributes. For now, Cloudburst is the immediate entry point into what the pair have shaped as a deliberately slow-brewing collaboration.
