POWER OF POP ALBUMS OF 2006
21. Dave Stephens – Stories for Copper
Stephens has done the perfect job in channeling the spirit of the 70s, without slavish imitation but instead, imbuing enough of his own personality to make Stories for Copper a unique and memorable aural experience.
22. Flaming Lips – At War with the Mystics
Flaming Lips are now a law unto themselves and At War With The Mystics indicates that the Flaming Lips will not simply fade into the psychedelic-coloured sunset.
23. Belle & Sebastian – The Life Pursuit
Unashamedly retro, creatively plagiaristic and very very cool.
24. Dave Gilmour – On An Island
It is a pleasant surprise to discover that Gilmour’s third solo album is perhaps as enjoyable and as fulfilling – if not as groundbreaking – as anything his erstwhile group produced in the 70s.
Couple’s modus operandi is fairly straightforward, 2-3 minute songs about love and having fun wrapped up in the sweetest reference points – the Beatles, the Beach Boys, Big Star, Teenage Fanclub, BMX Bandits etc.
