Muse marked their return with an unusual publicity stunt: the band announced their new record by lofting a tablet more than 20 miles (about 32 km) above the Earth and using that airborne screen to debut the music video for their latest single. Muse chose the album’s name as a direct reference to a real astronomical anomaly from 1977. That year, a radio telescope recorded a 72‑second burst from the direction of Sagittarius that stood out for its strength and narrow bandwidth; the observer famously wrote the sequence 6EQUJ5 in the printout and noted “Wow!” beside it. The incident has since become a touchstone in popular discussions about unexplained cosmic signals.
The band’s announcement leaned into that history: a label statement framed the record around themes of cosmic uncertainty, human longing and the possibility of contact with something beyond our everyday experience.
