At New York Comic Con 2026, veteran comics creator Denys Cowan confirmed that characters from the Milestone universe are rejoining the DC Comics fold, starting with a new ongoing for Static. The announcements point to a broader revival of the imprint’s characters inside DC’s publishing slate and signal more releases to watch in the coming months.
Cowan, co-founder of Milestone Media, told Chris Anton on the Chris Covers Comics podcast that the publisher’s immediate focus is on bringing Static back in a sustained way. The new run will be written by Cody Ziglar with art by Diego Olortegui, part of a push tied to the Dakota-themed DC event that reintroduces Milestone’s world to a mainstream audience.
The creator described the early response to Static’s relaunch as overwhelmingly positive and said the team is exploring additional projects featuring other Milestone characters. He did not provide a full schedule, but suggested the Static series is only the first step.
Other projects and collaborations
Cowan also announced a one-shot revival of OMAC produced for DC’s Black Label line. The book is a collaboration with writer-artist Ho Che Anderson, who Cowan noted has worked with Milestone before on titles such as Wise Son and the graphic novel King. OMAC was one of several pitches the duo brought to DC and was the first to be greenlit.
Separately, Cowan remains active on mainstream DC work: he’s drawing Nightwing with writer Dan Watters. He described the creative tone they’ve explored together as darker than some of his previous work, saying he personally tends to avoid horror entertainment but that Watters’ scripts have pushed into unsettling territory.
“I don’t usually seek out stories to frighten me,” Cowan explained, noting the scripts have leaned into intense, sometimes gruesome imagery — from violent set pieces to morally fraught antagonists — which has challenged him in a new way as an artist.
- Static — New ongoing series by Cody Ziglar (writer) and Diego Olortegui (artist); anchors Milestone’s return to DC.
- OMAC — Black Label one-shot co-created with Ho Che Anderson; grew out of a series of pitches to DC.
- Nightwing — Ongoing collaboration with Dan Watters; noted for darker, horror-tinged scripts.
- Future plans — Cowan signaled additional Milestone-related releases are under consideration but gave no firm dates.
Why this matters now: Milestone’s return inside DC represents more than the relaunch of a few characters. The original imprint, launched in the early 1990s, was created to bring more diverse voices and stories to mainstream superhero comics. Its reintroduction into DC’s universe could broaden representation on current shelves and influence how legacy characters are recontextualized for today’s readers.
Cowan’s NYCC remarks leave several questions open — release calendars, creative teams beyond Static, and how deeply Milestone’s broader continuity will be integrated into DC’s line. Fans and retailers will likely get clearer timelines as DC announces solicitations and shipping dates over the next few months.
For now, the headline is clear: Milestone is back in the conversation at DC, starting with a high-profile Static relaunch and a Black Label one-shot, and more entries may follow as the publisher and creators reveal further plans.
