New Jersey producer JWords will self-release her second solo album, Sound Therapy, on May 8, and she’s unveiled its lead single, “Lush,” today. The record marks a notable shift: it’s the first project on which JWords takes on lead vocal duties in addition to production.
The follow-up to her 2022 debut, Self-Connection, Sound Therapy brings guest appearances from Nappy Nina and Kingsley Ibeneche. JWords has an existing creative relationship with Nappy Nina—she produced Nina’s 2021 album Double Down—and the new collaboration continues that partnership in a more vocal-forward context.
Outside her solo work, JWords is one half of the duo H31R with Brooklyn rapper Maassai; their most recent record, Headspace, appeared in 2023. That dual role—producer and performer—frames why this release matters: listeners can expect to hear JWords expand her sonic palette while retaining the production sensibility that defined her earlier projects.
Why this matters now: JWords stepping up as a lead singer changes how her production choices land, potentially shifting attention from the underground beat scene to a broader audience that follows vocal-led indie and alternative hip-hop releases. The new single offers an early glimpse at that transition.
