ALBUM REVIEW: WHITE DENIM – STIFF

Whitedenim

Background
White Denim is an American four-piece rock band from Austin, Texas. Known for their musical eclecticism, the band’s sixth full-length album was co-produced by Ethan Johns (Paul McCartney, Laura Marling) and has been described by the quartet as a return to its frenetic rock band roots.

Strengths
Recorded live, the songs have a raw immediacy that is absent from most modern pop and rock. The songwriting draws from a wide range of styles from the 60s/70s and incorporates a surprising potent R&B/Soul vibe.

Highlights
“Ha ha ha (Yeah)”, “Holda You (I’m Psycho)”, “Take It Easy (Ever After Lasting Love)”, “(I’m the One) Big Big Fun”.

Sounds Like
Smokey Robinson, Marvin Gaye, Rolling Stones, Stooges, Minutemen, White Stripes.

Bottom Line
A wide-ranging rock ’n’ roll masterpiece that reminds us of how deep the well of inspiration of 60s/70s rock can be.
