I have been a fan of Bittersweet Machines (a.k.a. Matt Mocharnuk) since the first time my ears tasted the perfect beauty of his pop songs.
Mocharnuk’s main strength is the uncanny ability to assimilate the essence of 80s pop (whether it be the big music of U2, the techno sheen of New Order or the melancholy vérité of The Smiths) and the singer-songwriter hits the spot on both ‘sides’ of this gorgeous single.
The title track is an epic synth-laden acoustic folk-rock number that drips like honey into your consciousness while “The Way Back Home” holds a country-folk torch at the end of a long dark tunnel. The latter moves away from typical BM territory but its organic sincerity is heartfelt with a chorus that soars.
