Opinions. It’s all we have when it comes to Pop Culture. And opinions are shaped by age, education, upbringing, peer group etc.
If you are in your late 50s like me, you would recognise the band depicted above – in black and white – as the Electric Light Orchestra (ELO) and might even recognise some of their hit songs back in the 70s/80s.
You might even be in my age group but detest ELO as commercial pop and they were certainly critically derided in their time. But if you were born in the 80s and after, you would probably have no idea who ELO are! However, you would be familiar with the duo depicted in colour above.
Yeah, that’s the Chainsmokers – one of the most successful EDM artists out there and also one of the most hated at the moment. Chances are if you are a millennial, you are most probably a Chainsmokers fan cuz their music is hugely popular.
I personally dislike the music of Chainsmokers for a variety of reasons but mainly for the lack of any musicality whatsoever. It is music cynically created for the youthful masses who have been brainwashed into believing that good music does not require sophistication or ability, as long as that familiar EDM beat is present.
Of course, that’s an opinion I hold and only that. You are perfectly entitled to disagree and I am sure many do. Which is absolutely fine.
What bugs me is how some people will get in your face – virtually – about how the music they like is somehow factually ‘superior’ to the music you like. There’s no such thing.
Every basis that one uses to establish a standard of comparison can be dismantled easily in the mind of a demurrer because it’s ultimately a subjective exercise.
So, once more I stress – there is no such thing as GOOD or BAD music, only MUSIC THAT YOU LIKE and MUSIC THAT YOU DISLIKE.
Enjoy (and share) what you like and stop trying to convince others that your musical taste is somehow better …

… still there’s more …
