Julia Jacklin will release a new album, The Gem, on September 25 through 4AD, the singer-songwriter announced today. The record’s lead single, “Get Away From Me (I Think I’ll Love You Soon),” is available now, marking the first glimpse of work Jacklin recorded after relocating to Melbourne.
Jacklin frames the album around a long-running personal question: how to reconcile a wish for intimacy with a need for independence. In press notes she described the songs as the result of a slow, often solitary search—uncertain at times, but driven by the belief that something meaningful would emerge.
The project takes its name from a Melbourne pub and live-music room where Jacklin has been based since leaving Sydney in 2017. She and her band converted a hotel room above that venue into a makeshift studio and completed the recordings there, a setup that the singer says shaped the record’s atmosphere.

The move to 4AD is a notable development: the label has a long track record of supporting distinct, artist-driven records. For listeners, the new release promises an immediate connection to Jacklin’s songwriting while also reflecting a different creative environment.
