Paramount+ has revived a long-gestating continuation of the 1995 comedy Clueless, officially ordering a limited series that returns Alicia Silverstone to the role of Cher Horowitz. The pickup follows an April decision by Peacock to shelve the project, and Paramount is positioning the show as a Los Angeles-made revival of a cultural touchstone.
What the new Clueless series will be
The series is set three decades after the original film and centers on a grown Cher navigating a successful career and parenthood. According to the streaming service, the storyline explores how raising a teenager reintroduces Cher to the same uncertainties and social minefields that made her an icon in the 1990s.
Silverstone is attached both as the lead and as an executive producer. Amy Heckerling, who wrote and directed the 1995 movie, is also returning to an executive producer role. Writing credits include Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage — known for creating Gossip Girl and The O.C. — along with Jordan Weiss.
- Format: Limited series
- Lead: Alicia Silverstone (Cher Horowitz)
- Creative team: Amy Heckerling (EP), Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage (writers), Jordan Weiss (writer)
- Location: Filming slated in Los Angeles
- Production timeline: Principal photography expected to begin in 2027
- Cast status: No confirmation yet on other original cast members returning
Why this matters now
Streaming platforms continue to lean on familiar franchises to draw subscribers, and Paramount+’s move underscores the value placed on recognizable IP. By committing to shoot in Los Angeles, the series also signals investment in local production crews and on-screen talent tied to the city.

For fans, the project offers a direct line back to a well-known character at a moment when many viewers are receptive to nostalgia-driven content. For the industry, the shift from Peacock to Paramount+ highlights ongoing reshuffling of projects as platforms assess slate priorities and audience appetite.
What remains unknown
Paramount has released only a brief logline and the creative team list. There is no official release date, and producers have not confirmed whether any of Cher’s original friends or supporting characters will appear. The 2027 start date leaves room for additional casting announcements and production updates between now and principal photography.
Executives framed the acquisition as a homecoming: in a brief statement, Jane Wiseman, head of originals at Paramount+, said the streamer intends to honor the original film’s ties to Los Angeles while building a modern series around its lead.
Expect more details — including casting and a firm premiere window — as the project moves toward production. Until then, the pickup marks a notable example of legacy IP getting a second life on the streaming market.
