Poirot recast with Killing Eve alum: Downton Abbey star joins new Magnificent Seven

British actress Joanne Froggatt is set to join the cast of MGM+’s new take on The Magnificent Seven, a high-profile addition that underscores the streamer’s push into character-driven Western drama. Industry outlet Deadline first reported the casting, which pairs Froggatt with several established U.S. television names as the series moves into production.

Froggatt will portray Harriet Talbot, a widow who becomes the catalyst for assembling a group of hired fighters to defend her community. The role shifts her from period drama to a tougher, frontier-era part, expanding the range she’s shown in previous series work.

Also announced: Amy Forsyth joins as sharpshooter Katie “Deadeye” Dalton, and Danny Pino is set to play Santiago “Santi” Vega, a charismatic con man. These additions round out a cast that blends younger talent with veteran performers.

Casting and creative team

The series is a reimagining of the classic 1960 Western and is being shepherded by writer and executive producer Tim Kring, known for his serialized work on television dramas. Rather than retelling the film shot-for-shot, the show will follow seven flawed mercenaries hired to protect a peaceful Quaker settlement after it’s attacked by hired forces intent on takeover.

  • Joanne Froggatt — Harriet Talbot (widow and community organizer)
  • Amy Forsyth — Katie “Deadeye” Dalton (gunslinger)
  • Danny Pino — Santiago “Santi” Vega (charming con man)
  • Matt Dillon — Chris Adams (stoic leader)
  • Will Patton — cast in a principal role
  • Michael Ealy — cast in a principal role

Anchoring the ensemble is Matt Dillon as the group’s pragmatic leader, joined by seasoned actors Will Patton and Michael Ealy. MGM+ appears to be aiming for a balance of star power and genre credibility as it updates the story for contemporary streaming audiences.

Where this fits in Froggatt’s career

Froggatt earned widespread recognition for her Emmy‑nominated turn as Anna in the period series Downton Abbey. More recently she’s been seen opposite Tom Hardy in the Paramount+ crime drama MobLand, and this casting marks a clear move into American genre television with a leading ensemble role.

The decision to cast a British performer known for period work in a rugged Western ensemble reflects a broader trend: streamers are increasingly mixing international talent into U.S. genre projects to broaden appeal and deepen character-driven storytelling.

No official premiere date has been announced yet. As production progresses, the series will be one to watch for viewers interested in modern reinterpretations of classic Western narratives and actors shifting between period and contemporary television work.
