Y The Last Man S01E09 is the penultimate episode of the first season of the dystopian post-apocalyptic FX TV drama series streaming on Disney+ based on the DC Comics series created by Brian K Vaughn and Pia Guerra. The premise of Y The Last Man postulates a dystopian future where all men are wiped out save for one.
Entitled “Peppers”, Y The Last Man S01E09 brings a couple of plot threads to a head – though by and large unsatisfactorily. Before, we look at the episode itself, FX on Hulu announced that the series was being cancelled and thus would not have a second season. However, our understanding that a host of behind the scenes issues made that decision happen and the cancellation was not based on poor viewership.
That said, it is clear that early on, it was clear that Y The Last Man was not a very cohesive TV series whatsoever. Y The Last Man S01E09 certainly brings that point home in its continuing poor world building, lack of narrative pacing and unlikable, uninteresting characters.
Now, the main event in Y The Last Man S01E09 is the attack on the Pentagon by rebel forces but that entire sequence is unwieldy and unrealistic – it made no sense whatsoever. Who were these people who were trying to overthrow the government – none of that is made clear. Also, the action and dramatic pieces were so badly staged that it was difficult to discern what exactly was happening on screen. Ugh.
Elsewhere, like in the comic books, the Daughters of the Amazon are on a headlong collision with the folks in Marrisville, where Yorick, Dr Mann and Agent 355 are currently holed up. However, the manner in which this is set up is just too convenient and unbelievable. Bad writing all around.
And so Y The Last Man S01E09 brings us to the season 1 finale next week which as it stands now is the end of the series altogether. Don’t hold your breath.
