Westworld Season 4 Episode 4 Analysis

Westworld Season 4 Episode 4 is the fourth instalment of the fourth season of an American dystopian science fiction television series created by Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy. The first two seasons were loosely based on Michael Crichton’s Westworld movie where android hosts in a Western theme park rebelled against their human masters. The third season explored the world in which this theme park were set in, thereby rendering the title irrelevant. At the end of which, the status quo of the world had been altered when Rehoboam, the A.I. that controlled and ordered the world was destroyed.

Entitled “Generation Loss”, Westworld Season 4 Episode 4 finally reinstated what made Season 1 so great – the good old fashioned mind-fuck! We had suspected that there were a couple of different time-lines being depicted in the first 3 episodes of this season, and this instalment fully confirms this for a fact.

Remember we posited that Bernard’s timeline was in the future when compared to that of Maeve and Caleb? By the end of this episode, as Bernard ventures into the desert with “C” to find a weapon for a new apocalyptic war, we find out most of the narrative with Caleb was happening in his mind. What?

Well, Westworld Season 4 Episode 4 begins with the Hale android attempt to wake Caleb and we are led to believe that events depicted were continuing from the last. Well, to a degree. Caleb and Maeve escape and take Hale hostage indeed. But when we get to the point when Maeve “dies”, we discover that Caleb also died in the park and right how, ‘he’ is recalling the incident as part of the fidelity test for androids imbued with a formerly human consciousness!

When Caleb truly wakes, he is in the Olympiad Entertainment building, where Christina (Dolores) has been shown to work before. So, Christina is in the same future timeline as Bernard where Hale is now controlling the world? Appears so.

So, in the desert, Bernard tells “C” that she is looking for her father who died at the location that Bernard is digging. “C” is of course Frankie (Caleb’s daughter) now grown as 23 years have passed since Caleb’s death. Caleb’s body is not found, instead it is revealed that Bernard’s weapon is in fact, Maeve….

Westworld Season 4 Episode 4 is probably the best episode of the bewildering series in a long while.

Now streaming on HBO Max.
