Westworld Season 4 Episode 2 Analysis

Westworld Season 4 Episode 2 is the 2nd instalment of the fourth season of an American dystopian science fiction television series created by Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy. The first two seasons were loosely based on Michael Crichton’s Westworld movie where android hosts in a Western theme park rebelled against their human masters. The third season explored the world in which this theme park were set in, thereby rendering the title irrelevant. At the end of which, the status quo of the world had been altered when Rehoboam, the A.I. that controlled and ordered the world was destroyed.

Entitled “Well Enough Alone”, Westworld Season 4 Episode 2 finally brings the series back to its roots – the theme parks. Whereas previous theme parks were located outside of the USA, this time, the theme park that is revealed at the end of the episode is in the USA – William had been said to have been buying up ‘scrubland’ – and is set in the Roaring’ Twenties!

If nothing else, Westworld Season 4 Episode 2 at least provides the viewers with a glimmer of hope that perhaps Westworld is trying to get back on track – as in the first two seasons. Maeve and Caleb are invited by an old friend – probably the Charlotte android, which is actually one of the Dolores variants – to the opening of this new theme park, and the promise of Westworld is re-ignited.

But what about Christina android – is she another Dolores variant? Is this timeline happening in parallel with that of Maeve/Caleb? Is it maybe taking place in another theme park altogether? Who knows? Westworld is well-known with mucking around with non-linear narratives.

Back to Maeve/Caleb – the duo discover that instead of the androids being destroyed – as alluded to at the end of Season 3, there are now 249 androids out there. The real William is being kept alive by Charlotte, and she explains her cryptic plan for the androids to take over the world by altering humans to protect the androids. Intriguing, finally!

Now streaming on HBO Max.
