UNDER THE BANNER OF HEAVEN EPISODE 6 (ANALYSIS)

Under the Banner of Heaven Episode 6 is the sixth part of an 2022 American true crime drama television miniseries based on the nonfiction book of the same name by Jon Krakauer. The premise involves a police detective who’s faith is shaken when investigating the murder of a Mormon mother and her baby daughter that seems to involve The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church).

Entitled “Revelation”, Under the Banner of Heaven Episode 6 is not much better than the previous episodes that came before it. We already known from the beginning that the Mormon mother (Brenda) and her baby daughter were killed by fundamentalist Mormons and that the elder Lafferty brothers Ron and Dan were involved, together with one Prophet Onias. Yet the the episodes continue with its circular narratives without ever getting near to either Ron or Dan.

Under the Banner of Heaven Episode 6 subjects Detective Pyre to more pressure as his faith begins to unravel in the face of the fundamentalist teachings and the modern LDS failure to deal with these conflicts at all. Sure, we can understand what Pyre is going through on an intellectual level but unfortunately, it is difficult to feel any empathy for anyone foolish enough to be a Mormon to begin with. It is a religious cult built on lies and Pyre’s realisation of this fact seems to us a good thing rather than bad.

So, yes we get the idea that Brenda (and her daughter) were murdered because she resisted Ron and Dan and paid the ultimate price – “blood atonement” but once again we knew this from the get-go and the lack of any tension in the series, not to mention its snail-like pace, has render this series a very poor experience. At least, there’s only one episode left. Thank God!
