SHERLOCK: SEASON 3

As a young kid, I loved the Basil Rathbone version of Arthur Conan Doyle’s legendary detective. Subsequently of course, Sherlock Holmes fans have had no shortage of versions to choose from. Perhaps its the unsmiling Jeremy Brett one or the Steven Spielberg’s vision of the Young Sherlock Holmes or the latest Hollywood incarnation with Robert Downey Jr or even the quirky Elementary US TV series (where Lucy Liu is Watson!)

But of course, for the geeks, there can only be one – a contemporary adaptation created by Steven Moffat and Mark Gatniss and starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman as Holmes and Watson respectively. So far, two seasons (of three 90 minute long episodes each) have duly impressed with a very modernized take on Sherlock Holmes with the basis still firmly rooted in the original Doyle storylines.

Last time out, inĀ “The Reichenbach Fall”, the season 2 finale referenced Doyle’s “The Final Problem” where Holmes and Moriaty fall together to their apparent deaths and ended on a cliffhanger (i.e. Holmes’ death as witnessed by Watson). Naturally, the opening scenes of the first Season 3 episode had to address this and typically, nothing is quite as it seems. Yes certain scenarios are played out where it is explained how Holmes faked his death but it’s never quite clear whether these are true or not. Brilliant! After a shaky reunion between Holmes and Watson (it’s two years later!), its back on the hunt as the duo take on an assignment from Mycroft Holmes to thwart a terrorist attack. Sublime fun from start to finish. Looking forward to the rest of Season 3 with eager anticipation.
