The Wheel of Time Season 2 Ep 1-3 are the opening chapters of the second season of an American high fantasy television series developed by Rafe Judkins for Amazon Prime Video. The series is based on the novel series of the same name by Robert Jordan with Brandon Sanderson. Similar to Foundation over at AppleTV+, we were of the view that the adaptation of these genre fiction classics fell well short of the source material, but despite that like Foundation, this series had been renewed for a second and now, a third season!
S P O I L E R S
The Wheel of Time Season 2 Ep 1-3 finds our key characters in a different time and place due to the events of the season 1 finale. Moiraine has lost her powers, Egwene and Nynaeve have enlisted as novices in the White Tower, Perrin has joined the Shienarans to hunt for the Horn of Valere, Mat is a prisoner of Liandrin while Rand (the Dragon Reborn) is in hiding. Whew. Too many characters perhaps? Too much setup to be accomplished? After all, the endgame for the series is the so-called Last Battle and the Dragon Reborn plays a big part in that.
In truth, the first three chapters of the second season are all somewhat ponderous and baffling. None of the characters are likeable or engaging and this is partly due to the poor writing but also down to the average cast members. Guess we would all be more interested in these characters if the cast was stronger but as we discovered in the first season, their performing skills are limited. Plot-wise, quite a fair bit is going on but everything about The Wheel of Time looks cheap and half-baked. Hopefully, things pick up – like it has with Foundation Season 2 – so fingers crossed, eh?
