The Wheel of Time S01E04 Review

The Wheel of Time S01E04 is the fourth episode of the first season of an American epic fantasy television drama series streaming on Amazon Prime Video. The series is based on Robert Jordan’s novel series of the same name and is produced by Sony Pictures Television and Amazon Studios. The series has already been renewed for a second season!

Entitled “Dragon Reborn”, The Wheel of Time S01E04 shows glimpses of the potential of this series. The world-building of Jordan’s acclaimed novel series is finally given the time to breathe as the first two acts of the episode deals with quite a bit of exposition. Although this might slow down the pacing of the narrative somewhat, this is absolutely necessary not only to provide context for the plot but for the audience to get to know the key characters better and improve engagement.

In The Wheel of Time S01E04, the Aes Sedai (essential an organisation of sorceresses, for want of a better term) come face to face with Logain, who claims to be the Dragon reborn (hence the title). This encounter becomes a challenge even for the number of Aes Sedai on hand and by the end of the episode lives are lost amongst the Aes Sedai and their Warders. And there’s a handy surprise twist in the denouement as well!

Our four young villagers who Moiraine had identified as possible reborn Dragons viz. Egwene, Rand, Perrin and Mat – are still on the road having been separated from Moiriane. With the surprise reveal at the episode’s end, it brings to question the status of these four in respect of their roles in this epic fantasy story. It’s a positive turn for the rest of this season and hopefully this promise pans out. Certainly, there is some optimism to recommend The Wheel of Time with now…

Now streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
