Previously…
The Umbrella Academy season 3 picks up right from the end of the previous season where the group return to the present after saving the day in the 1963. However, they discover that they do not exist in this new timeline but have been replaced by The Sparrow Academy viz. Marcus (#1), Ben (#2), Fei (#3), Alphonso (#4), Sloane (#5), Jayme (#6) and Christopher (#7). Obviously then, the main over-ridding quest would be to figure out why this is so and if possible solve the problem.

Losing the Plot …
While not quite as risible as Season 2, the plot in The Umbrella Academy season 3 suffers from similar pacing issues and vacillates between fight scenes between Umbrellas and Sparrow, and long-drawn dialogue-heavy character examinations. There are also sub-plots involving the return of Five and Lila to the Commission, the budding romance of Luther and Sloane, Lila’s gaslighting Diego in believing they have a son, Hargreeves facilitating Klaus’ discovery of the extent of his powers, Vanya transitioning into Viktor and her attempts to help an elderly (overpowered) Harlan and Allison’s annoying whining over the loss of Ray, her husband (from the 60s) and Clare, her daughter from the previous timeline! Whatever their flaws, these sub-plots do manage to maintain engagement well enough.
Character Assassination …
The Umbrella Academy season 3 has decided to turn every single character into unrelatable, self-absorbed assholes, every single one. Well, maybe the kind-hearted Sloane is the only likeable one, and of course Five is always cool. BUT the rest of the characters are selfish, narcissistic, stubborn and invariably dumb, making stupid decisions galore! The worst of the bunch is probably Allison, who has transformed into an unreliable, treacherous monster. Ugh.
In the Final Analysis ….
If you have followed the first two seasons, you would expect The Umbrella Academy season 3 to end exactly as it did. A new timeline, a new reality. This time with Hargreeves controlling everything and the heroes without powers. Which sets up season 4 of course, in a boringly formulaic manner – which presumably how all good comic books would do. Better than season 2, but only just.
