The Time Traveler’s Wife Episode 5 is the fifth instalment of a science-fiction romantic-drama television series written by Steven Moffat and based on the novel of the same name by Audrey Niffenegger. The novel was previously adapted as a film in 2009 and received mixed reviews.

The Time Traveler’s Wife Episode 5 is a mixed bag. There are times where the pace lags heavily especially in rather leaden dialogue between Henry and Clare. But the saving grace is that this episodes highlights two intriguing plot points. One, that in order to survive his condition, Henry needed the assistance of others apart from Clare – and thus, we discover that Gomez (introduced in the last episode) is indeed Henry’s best friend (and saves Henry’s neck in this one). Two, the Henrys that Clare encounters in the course of her life are all different (yet the same) – an interesting dichotomy.

The main gimmick behind The Time Traveler’s Wife Episode 5 is a rom-com trope — where the boy meets the girl’s family for the first time. An additional twist in this case is that Clare’s youngest sister is aware of Henry’s condition – yet another expansion to those “in the know”. This is where the episode somewhat failed to hold our attention, Clare’s family was not engaging at all. But in the context of building on the Henry-Clare dynamic, it was probably serviceable.
Sure, the tension within the story itself is the danger Henry faces whenever he time travels and the time and place he ultimately ends up in. That said, surely the youngest version of Henry would have to turn up in the future, wouldn’t he? And how would that young Henry cope — perhaps that needs to be addressed soon.
