The Time Traveler’s Wife Episode 4 is the fourth instalment of a science-fiction romantic-drama television series written by Steven Moffat and based on the novel of the same name by Audrey Niffenegger. The novel was previously adapted as a film in 2009 and received mixed reviews.

The Time Traveler’s Wife Episode 4 works hard to redeem the worst moments of the first episode of the series. Namely, the very idea that Henry ‘groomed’ Clare from the age of six, time-traveling to ‘imprint’ himself on her younger self a total of 152 times until she turned eighteen. The characters themselves address this issue – not so much a hot button topic when the novel was first published in 2003 – with 41 year old Henry uncomfortable on meeting 18 year old Clare, and confessing his reservations to her and Clare defiantly declaring that in fact she ‘groomed’ him!

The Time Traveler’s Wife Episode 4 finds the writing truly hitting its stride as Steven Moffat astutely explores the real-life implications of an inadvertent time traveler. None of the time hopping is intentional or welcomed and there is the unique problem of so many Henry’s jumping around on the timeline that the odds of more than one Henry encountering each other is fairly short. Which makes for more tension and conflict for sure.

In addition, The Time Traveler’s Wife Episode 4 introduces us to allies that are brought into the couple’s secret thereby widening the scope of influence. Of interest is the idea that unlike typical superhero type stories – there is no inclination in Henry to use his ‘powers’ for good, he is barely surviving as it is! Which strips the concept of artifice and makes Henry’s condition relatable. Highly recommended as the series gets stronger with each episode.
