The Old Man Episode 7 Analysis

The Old Man Episode 7 is the seventh (and final) instalment of the first season of an American action thriller television series based on the 2017 novel of the same name by Thomas Perry. The premise involves a former CIA operative who has been living off the grid for over 30 years. When an assassin arrives and tries to take him out, the operative (“old man”) must go on the run. The series debuted on FX in mid-June (USA/Canada) and will be streaming on Disney+ (worldwide) from mid-August.

The Old Man Episode 7 is yet another thrilling addition to its genre, one of the best new series of 2022. At the end of Episode 6, Chase and Harper agreed to work together to rescue Emily from Bote. Initially, it appears to both that the only way to recover Emily safely from Hamzah would be for Chase to surrender himself. But, as we soon discover, Hamzah is not really after Chase but is hoping to get hold of someone else entirely.

Being set in the spy thriller genre, some intense gunplay is expected but there is an unintentionally (we presume) hilarious sequence in which Bote’s hired gun skilfully picks off Hamzah’s men one by one, only to be taken by surprise by a single Hamzah female operative. Not sure if we should read too much into that – in terms of gender politics – let’s chalk it up to irony instead.

But perhaps The Old Man Episode 7 is somewhat memorable for its (predictable?) twist as it is revealed that Emily is in fact, the daughter of Hamzad, all along! Which will of course make the next season all about the inevitable conflict that will exist within Emily as she faces the truth behind her origins. Highly recommended!

Now streaming on FX.
