The Old Man Episode 4 is an intriguing instalment as it deviates significantly from your typical spy action thriller in that the supporting female characters make vital decisions that impact the main character beyond his control. This plot and character development somewhat subverts expectations as both Chase’s daughter Emily/Angela and kidnap victim Zoe turn the tables on him.

In the case of Emily/Angela, she has secretly embedded herself in the FBI so that she can protect her father. However, as things are panning such that Emily/Angela might be in the crosshairs of mutual enemy Hamzad, she defies Chase’s directions to leave the FBI and instead accompanies her boss Harper to meet with Hamzad.

As for Zoe, instead of being despondent about her situation, she turns it to her advantage by blackmailing Chase – she agrees to play along as his wife, if he transfers half of his wealth to her! What an absolute twist! Certainly no helpless victim here. Brilliant writing which helps to make the series very different from your typical spy action thrillers where the hero is usually macho and in control.

The Old Man Episode 4 contains everything that is great about this series thus far – intriguing plots and characters. Highly recommended!
