The Old Man Episode 3 Analysis

The Old Man Episode 3 is the third instalment of an American action thriller television series based on the 2017 novel of the same name by Thomas Perry. The premise involves a former CIA operative who has been living off the grid for over 30 years. When an assassin arrives and tries to take him out, the operative (“old man”) must go on the run. The series debuted on FX in mid-June (USA/Canada) and will be streaming on Disney+ (worldwide) from mid-August.

The Old Man Episode 3 has really one action sequence involving our protagonist Dan Chase but it is really the behind the scenes machinations and expository flashbacks that prove to be intriguing. In the previous episode, it was revealed that Chase’s daughter Emily had committed suicide a while back but we now discover that the “Emily” that Chase had been conversing with is indeed a real person (and NOT a figment of his imagination). More than that, “Emily” is in fact the Angela Adams introduced in the earlier episodes as FBI agent Angela Adams! What a twist?!?

However, that’s as far as The Old Man Episode 3 goes to provide us with more information regarding Emily/Angela. Presumably, her boss Harold Harper is completely unaware of this fact although the fact that Angela knew Chip – Harper’s recently deceased son – during childhood is admittedly very confusing. That’s probably something that will be explained in subsequent episodes but there’s no indication here at all that Harper is aware that quite obviously Angela fed Chase intel enabling him to escape the SWAT team sent to capture him.

Other than this and the flashbacks (that Chase had ‘stolen’ the Afghan warlord’s wife), and the fact that Zoe is now also deeply involved in this deadly situation, nothing much else is revealed. A fascinating series that we highly recommend!

Now streaming on FX.
