Entitled “The Right Shade of Yellow”, The Offer Episode 4 focuses on the impact and consequences of Al Ruddy’s obsession with making the Godfather movie. Now, as we explained in our Story Analysis post previously, an effective story must have a main character with a dramatic need to drive the narrative and for sure, Ruddy and his need to make this movie ticks all the right boxes.
READ OUR ANALYSIS OF THE OFFER.
Thus, in the duration that The Offer Episode 4 fills up, we see Ruddy lose the love of his life, betray his mentor and compromise his moral principles, all for the sake of a movie! Clearly, this series is a tribute to film and film producers, as it captures brilliantly the trials and tribulations of these behind-the-scenes figures who seldom gets the attention that the so-called artists (i.e. actors and directors) do in the entertainment industry.
Now, what is intriguing about The Offer Episode 4 is that the tension remains despite the fact we know, of course, that the Godfather movie was completed. And yet, we feel Ruddy’s anxiety as each obstacle is flung into his path with greater frequency. This is textbook story writing and accounts for the engagement that The Offer has been able to generate despite its unlikely premise.
The Offer Episode 4 keeps the tension way up there as the episode ends with Al Pacino turning down the role of Michael Corleone purely due to a scheduling conflict (!) – check out next episode to witness how that problem is solved! Highly recommended.
