THE MAN WHO FELL TO EARTH EPISODE 5 (ANALYSIS)

The Man Who Fell to Earth Episode 5 is the fifth instalment of an American science fiction television series created by Jenny Lumet and Alex Kurtzman. The series is based on the 1963 novel of the same name by Walter Tevis and previously made into a film in 1976 starring David Bowie. This television series is actually a continuation of the events depicted in the film, a sequel of sorts.

Entitled “Moonage Daydream”, The Man Who Fell to Earth Episode 5 centres its narrative focus on the alien Faraday, as he struggles to decipher and understand Newton’s 10th design – the very purpose for which he left home and his family to come to Earth. Thus, utilising flashback memories of Faraday leaving Anthea as well as through assimilating his human side, Faraday is able to make peace with himself in order to solve the puzzle of Newton’s 10th design.

The Man Who Fell to Earth Episode 5 opens with Faraday and Hatch setting up operations in OriGen to work on Newton’s 10th design, while Justin Falls returns to the USA to bring her family over to London. But there is a problem (of course, there is) – Faraday cannot make head or tail of Newton’s 10th design. This failure brings an existential crisis upon Faraday as his entire purpose begins to crumble. He appears to be confronted with a former scientist who claimed to have worked with Newton in the 1980s, but things are not quite as they seem. Naturally.

There is a minor sub-plot involving Justin Falls and her daughter being unwilling to uproot and cross the Atlantic due to her mother’s new job. Justin’s role rises to prominence in the end due to her previous research – for which she carries trauma due to her lover’s death. But of course, this conflict is resolved with her daughter providing Faraday with greater insight into human creativity.

The Man Who Fell to Earth Episode 5 is one of the stronger episodes thus far and we are glad to continue to recommended this intriguing series.
